Since my unsuccessful Alaska trip at the beginning of November, I have been training on my own basically out of touch with the outside ski world. This December has been particularly lonely because there are not national-caliber races except the World Cups in Canada (which I didn't make) and because I missed the one race we have around here where all of the college teams participate. I have won all 4 races I've entered in December by large margins, but it is hard to judge if you're fast or not when you're racing against high school kids and local masters. On the plus side, I have had some really solid training with much higher volume than I've ever managed before in December. This month is usally filled with travel and races with therefore less time to "train". I have been doing all of my interval sessions focusing on the specific demands of Soldier Hollow. Finding hills and rolling sections that fit the profiles of the hi ...

Sending out a what's up from Park City. Seems like everyone wants to know what the skiing is like out here. I have been hanging out here since the 19th and the skiing is good. Not great but good. There is enough snow to ski on the golf course in Park City and Soldier Hollow is not bad. They have the typical early season 2.5k loop groomed and buffed out. For those of you that have been there before it goes out of the stadium, up past the day lodge, up the canyon for about another .5k and then goes back down the hill towards the stadium, and finally under the bridge and back in. There is also an out and back section below rollercoaster that is perfect as well. The skiing up the canyon all the way to the top of Spin N'Grin is good but there is not much base. If the days stay real warm without any new snow I am not sure if they will take us up there for the races. We will have to see what the weather does. If you have rock skis bring them, unles ...

It is tough being at home while everyone else is at the World Cup in Canmore, but training is going along pretty well and I hope that the last few weeks of training are going to bump up the fitness for US Nationals, which is coming up rapidly. I’ve been in Winter Park, Colorado for what seems like an eternity, but has only been 3 days. Cold, slow snow has been the theme for the week as we seem to get daily doses of fresh, dry powder that keeps the snow sharp and the brakes on. I woke up yesterday to a splendid Colorado day. The thermometer read -5F, but the sun was dazzling in its intensity and I postponed my morning interval session by an hour thinking that it would certainly heat up quickly. At 10:30AM it was still -1F despite the sun’s best efforts, so I dragged myself out and did my intervals. 8x3 minutes is not a lot of fun at this altitude, and on fresh, windblown snow that fell at below 0 temps, it is almost silly.   ...

Yo
Yeah sorry it has been awhile since my last post. Kate seems to do a real good job at letting everyone know what's up so I have been letting her do all of the work. I guess I am going to have to step it up tomorrow though since both Davey and Kate are racing. It'll be my turn to take some sic pics of the 10/15k World Cup races here in Canmore. It is a pretty cool setting for a ski town. Huge rock walls form a spectacular valley in which the town is nestled. The ski trails are right at the foot of one of the rock faces and the scenery is so outrageous that I can understand why the Canadian Cross Country Ski Team is so pumped to live and train here. Silver Star was pretty sweet too. Got to hop in my first World Cup. I was pretty happy with the turn out even though I only got to ski in the prelim. The course was 1.4 k and I was about 9.5 seconds out from the winner. I haven't done a ton of sprint specific training this year so I think that was alright. Hopefully I can keep skiiing into the sprint r ...
